VW Polo

Test driven on the Island by Peter White
It’s 38 years since the VW Polo was first
seen on our roads, and throughout that
time it has maintained its status as one
of the most popular cars am ong Island
drivers.
Of course there have been many
subtle changes to the Polo since those
bygone days, perhaps best remembered
for that still-talked-about long, hot
summer, when Abba were wowing their
audiences with ‘Dancing Queen’. But the
new generation Polo is sure to be just as
popular as all of its ancestors.
The new VW Polo is basically neat,
compact, uncomplicated but with the
refinements you come to expect from

the German manufacturers. And it does
have a few welcome bonuses - like the
VW £1,000 deposit contribution, free
insurance and road tax of £30 per year.
I drove the Polo SE five-door one-litre
manual model, courtesy of Esplanade,
Medina Avenue, Newport. A 1.2 litre
diesel with Blue Motion Technology
is also available. The extras on the
model I drove included special metallic
paint, a 6.5-inch Discover Navigation
touch-screen entertainment and
communications system, and a
‘winter pack’ that consists of headlight
wash, heated front seats, heated rear
windscreen and heated washer jets.

The new Polo is easy to drive, is
comfortable and its size makes it easy to
park and negotiate some of the Island’s
narrower roads. VW pride themselves
on ensuring their cars are as close to
perfection as possible, with every detail
right for their customers. There is no
doubt they have met their own stringent
standards while producing the new Polo,
that is sure to be as popular as ever with
Island motorists.
The range starts at £11,100, with the
model I drove coming in at £14,400, but
