ON THE WATER
I
All calm around the Island
t was a calm wind that blew very few
any good during this year’s 83rd JP
Morgan Asset Management Round
the Island Race.
Hundreds of yachts failed to complete
the race and even first-placed Team
Richard Mille, the foiling GC32, took
nearly nine hours to cross the finish line.
Spax Solutions, the second GC32, took
second place.
Despite the early-morning start at
Cowes, many yachts struggled to even
reach The Needles, and by late afternoon
more than 100 boats had not managed to
complete even half of the 52-mile course
Retirements included round the world
yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur,
although Olympic multi-gold medallist
Sir Ben Ainslee did finally manage to
battle his way round.
Organisers will be hoping for more
wi nd when they 84th Round the Island
Race gets under starter’s orders in 2015.
