T
he legendary Sir Tom Jones was
in top form when he entertained
thousands of fans of all ages in a
stunning open air concert in the grounds
of Osborne House, writes Peter White.
It might only have been a flying
visit when he arrived on the Island by
helicopter as part of his British and
European tour, but the 74-year-old Welsh
singer soon showed he has lost none of
his style and charisma that has made him
a favourite for nearly 50 years.
Tom kept his promise to come to
the Island after last year’s scheduled
performance was cancelled at the last
minute. At the time he said it was because
he was suffering laryngitis, although on
his return he said the show was called off
in 2013 because of bad weather.
Whatever the reason, he made up for
lost time by belting out a string of his
massive hits including ‘Delilah’, ‘It’s Not
Unusual’, ‘Green, Green Grass of Home’
and ‘Sexbomb’ as well as several numbers
from his latest album ‘Spirit in the Room’.
Within minutes of leaving the stage,
Tom was back in the helicopter, heading
for the mainland, but leaving his adoring
fans marvelling at his stunning show.
His appearance was the second part of
a two-night gig at Osborne House which
also saw top girl band Little Mix perform.
Their fans night have been generally
younger than those who watched Tom
Jones, but they were nevertheless just as
noisy and enthusiastic as the quartet of
Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne
Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall kept them
entertained for 90 minutes, with all their
hits since they were formed through TV
talent show X Factor three years ago.
