They use adventurous and testing outdoor activities alongside support to assert their behaviour and raise confidence, self esteem and aspirations. It’s hoped that young people will re-engage at school, home and in the wider community to help them get their lives back on track. They primarily work with teenagers from 1318 yrs old who are referred by Island agencies. Many lack confidence and have low self-esteem; some have difficulties engaging with school and some are at risk of getting into trouble with the authorities. They offer a range of positive activities such as camping, mountain biking, climbing, water sports, archery, hiking etc. A residential trip is often included during this time to get groups to bond and to work through some of the issues they face. Young people who complete the programme are invited to remain engaged with Challenge & Adventure to continue with additional activities. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The majority of the work takes place here, utilising the very best of natures playground. Whether Kayaking down the Western Yar, mountain biking in Brighstone Forest or tree climbing in Parkhurst, they try to make the most of the facilities right on their doorstep. Challenge and Adventure also take the young people on specialist residential challenges in the UK and in Europe.
