ANTIQUES Buoyant at barton manor Hose Rhodes Dickson held a very successful auction on the premises at Barton Manor. As with all country house sales, attendance was very good with prices buoyant, especially for the garden statuary, with a pair of lead garden cherubs fetching £1,250. Barton Manor was once part of Queen Victoria’s Osborne Estate and Prince Albert established a model farm. The auction was held in one of the converted brick barns, which enabled Hose Rhodes Dickson to set out the furniture from the main house and still have plenty of room for the large number of eager bidders. The garden statuary was displayed on the adjoining lawns and even the sun shone! Although this was not the original mid-19th century contents of the Manor, the furniture was certainly of good quality. The connection with an important country house made sure that there was spirited bidding, with a mid-19th century carved oak fire surround, in 17th century style, fetching £700. Fashion always plays a key part in furniture prices and a set of four Gainsborough style armchairs proved popular, attaining a hammer price of £960. There are no longer many country house sales on the premises, but Hose Rhodes Dickson are well known for their regular Fine Art auctions held at their Brading Auction Rooms. The next sale is scheduled for Thursday August 16, with viewing on Wednesday August 15 from 9.00am until 7.00pm. Traditional glossy catalogues or the fully illustrated online version are also available. Rex Gully • Auctioneer & Valuer • 01983 402222 • www.hose-rhodes-dickson.co.uk www.visitislandlife.com 79
