MOTORING
A real
Classic!
One of the finest collections of classic
cars ever seen on the Island gathered
recently for the first part of a three-day
‘HERO’ Summer Classic Reliability trial
and tour.
The event, open to cars built before
1984, spent a day on the Island before
returning to the mainland for stages
in the New Forest and other south
of England venues, and finishing at
Goodwood.
The Island route began at Cowes Yacht
Haven, and also took in Calbourne
Mill and Osborne House and included
regularity sections and driving tests
without any navigational trickery or
night-time driving.
The impressive start list included a
Bugatti Type 35B and a Fiat 501 SS,
dating back to the 1920s, as well as 1930s
models Riley Brooklands, MG PA and a
Bentley 3.5L Special.
Among the host of cars dating between
1941 and 1959 were Bentleys, Jaguars
and an Austin Healey 100, while Alfa
Romeos, Austin Mini Coopers, Porsche
911s a Lotus Super 7 and MGB GT were
prominent in the 1960s era, along with
an Aston Martin, Austin Healey and
Triumph TR4.
Lagonda, Mercedes, Jaguar, AC Cobra
and even a Land Rover 110 represented
the early 1980s era, providing a spectacle
of sight and sound for motoring
enthusiasts on the Island, and the event is
expected to be back here again next year.
