Sunflower Ball celebrates 20 years' support from Moreys Moreys Builders’ Merchants hosted a Sunflower Ball at the Cowes Yacht Haven to celebrate their 20-year involvement with Walk the Wight and raising funds for The Earl Mountbatten Hospice. The ball, which raised around £4,000, was supported by customers, suppliers and friends of the hospice. Island illusionist Aaron Isted, entertained diners with his own brand of table magic which was followed by frantic bidding in the Grand Auction before The Accelerators took to the stage to provide the dance music . Since then the company have kept their association with the walk ever since. In the early days the walk was totally managed by Moreys staff, however as the annual event grew more popular outside volunteers were brought in to help make the walk the biggest fund raising walk on the Island. Moreys general manager Ron Bowler, confirmed that over 11,000 walkers had taken part in this year’s event, either walking the 26 miles from Bembridge to Alum Bay, or the first or second half, converging on the fields at Carisbrooke Castle. Also included in the total were walkers who covered the flat walk from Sandown to Shide as well as school children who covered virtually the full distance by walking to and from school for weeks preceding the main walk, and then walking from Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay via Tennyson Down on the day. Funds already collected for this year’s walk took the total raised in all the walks to over £2 million pounds. The 2011 walk will take place on Sunday May 15th.
