”Matt’s eggs are sold not only at the Farmers’ Market in
Newport and farm shops across the Island, they are also
available at the Tesco superstore, only a couple of miles
from his farm.
And in another big step in the right direction, he now
supplies the flour from his mill that is used at Tesco’
in-store bakery. It means all the company’s wholemeal
bread is made on-site, using Isle of Wight grain.
Matt has a team of six working with him, and
recently-introduced new machinery at the mill has helped
production. On his land he grows paragon spring wheat
which is harvested in September and is then replaced by
winter rye.
And the production line has not ended there. The latest
venture has been to rear non-organic free range pigs, with
the by-product of the Island-grown grain from the mill
being used to feed them.
He added: “I think the slogan for the pigs could be born,
bred and fed on the Isle of Wight!”
