fashion health & beauty Island Life - August/September 2010 Organ Donation The gift of life Dr Oliver Cramer pictured with team members It is a subject that many people still find difficult to come to terms with, and are somewhat reluctant to discuss. But the fact remains that organ donations save the lives of hundreds of people in the United Kingdom each year, including many from the Island. Dr. Oliver Cramer is a consultant anaesthetist in intensive care at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport. He is also the associate director of medical education and the clinical lead for organ donation at the hospital. Born in Germany, Dr Cramer arrived at St Mary’s just over six years ago, and previously worked in Malta and on the mainland. We spoke to him about the importance of being on the national organ donation register. He said: “As St Mary’s is a comparatively small hospital we do not transplant organs here. But people can donate organs at St Mary’s and then transplant teams come in to deliver them to wherever t
