GARDENING Autumn it is a good time for planting, as the soil is warm from the summer sun. Plants grow and establish well before the winter enabling them to be stronger for the following spring. One favourite evergreen plant of mine is the Hebe which has a wonderful range of varieties. Flowering with shades of pink through to purple and bursting into flower at different times of the year. They are easy to grow and even tolerate coastal planting. Another cottage Garden favourite is lavender, which is drought tolerant, providing grey foliage when not in flower. They produce spikes of fragrant flowers for all to enjoy. With careful planning a border can be planted with shrubs, perennials and grasses so there is continuous colour throughout the year. life VERBENA HOMESTEAD PURPLE HEBE GLORIOSA www.wightfrog.com/islandlife Another rewarding job for late summer or autumn is planting bulbs. What is more exciting then planting bulbs which lay dormant all winter and wake up in the spring to provide the much needed array of nodding daffodils, dainty snowdrops and triumphant tulips. 79
