This event is held each year and raises money for charity. Keith Trigg chairman of the gun club commented “ It was a huge success with over £850 being raised for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice”. The gun club was very pleased to be able to host this shoot for a very good cause. A special mention must go to Roger Wallis who organises this event and all the wives for putting on a great buffet and refreshments. The winning team was the Newnham Beaters and High Gun went to Mike Hayden. Island Life - www.islandlifemagazine.net The Andrew Turner Column The Isle of Wight MP... It’s the approaching summer recess which really makes me feel how lucky I am to be MP for the Isle of Wight. Of course it’s way too long – from 25th July to 9th October. No government should be free of parliamentary scrutiny for eleven weeks in a row. But it also is the only sustained period available in which an MP can live anything like a normal life in his constituency, in contrast with the Thursday-night-to-Mondaymorning when Parliament is sitting. You may hear that some MPs dash off to foreign parts as soon as the House rises. But the Island is different. There are so many summer events – the so-inventive and sparky carnivals (I enjoyed judging Shanklin last year and Sandown this); school fun-days, village fetes and shows; and the regular big events like Cowes Week, the County Show and the Garlic Festival. All of them are opportunities to meet and chat about the things that some folk think don’t merit a surgery appointment, a letter or even an e-mail. That’s why I so value my mobile summer surgery. It takes me to every nook and cranny of the Island when people can pop out of their front doors and find me waiting. The summer surgery brings forth the whole cross-section of human concerns, from potholes to paedophiles. I am regularly infuriated by the capacity of organizations which are supposedly there to help people to make their lives a misery, and it’s part of my duty to hurry those agencies when they fail – which they do too often! It’s hard to get angry sitting in the sun in Elmfield, even when faced with a constituent who is in the middle of a tax credit mess-up, but I drive home determined to sort the matter out. And I can share the joy of an elderly constituent who mentioned, a year ago, her wish for a handrail )Ѽ
