Rebuilding a
child’s smile
James Spence from James Spence & Colleagues Dental Surgery
in Ryde describes the restoration of a broken tooth.
In November 2017 a young regular
patient at the practice snapped her front
tooth 1 and came in to get it repaired.
The job was very interesting: we took
a 3D transparent shaper from a kit we
hold, having found one to just fit over
the stump 2 .
Using a
composite/glass
material, we then
filled the shaper
and bonded it to
the tooth 3 .
Once the glass
material had set,
the shaper and
the excess were
removed, and
the new build-up
polished 4 .
If we can get to
such a tooth very
Emma’s new smile
soon after the
accident, we can often help prevent the nerve dying
and so avoid a root filling.
Such a repair is made easier on a patient with such
healthy gums, and although Emma is one of our best
brushers we can teach anyone to achieve such a good
standard.
