Celebrating
100 years
of the RAF
With celebrations going on all over the
UK to mark the 100th anniversary of the
Royal Air Force on Easter Sunday, the Island
honoured the centenary with an open-air
service of thanksgiving and remembrance
in St Thomas Square, Newport.
Led by the Rev Andrew Poppe of St Mary the Virgin
Church in Cowes, it was attended by members and
former members of the RAF.
Chairman of the Isle of Wight’s Royal Air Force
Association, Richard Morey, said the service was
attended by around 25 active and retired members
and was a joyful local celebration of the big
national event.
It was on April 1 1918 that the Royal Flying Corps
and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to create
the RAF – the world’s first independent air service.
