Safely gathered in There aren’t many areas of the Island that have escaped John Russell’s fence-building expertise over the years. In fact he jokes that if you were to walk from the Needles all the way to Culver Cliff, you’d be hard-pressed to find many spots that he hasn’t built a fence on! John, who has been running his JR Fencing business from Shorwell for the past 25 years, specialises in high quality large-scale fencing, and some of his clients include the National Trust, RSPB, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the Island’s Donkey Sanctuary. “We do some domestic fencing, but mainly it’s larger-scale work such as agricultural and stock fencing and security, which I really enjoy”. Working on projects such as these means that John can also claim to have fenced in everything from ostriches and alpacas to wallabys and meerkats! He employs three other fence builders, and says they all take pride in doing a great job, no matter how large or small it is – from 100 metres to 5,000. “We’ve built up a good reputation for quality work, so at the end of every job there’s always a great feeling of satisfaction” he says.
