Your own personal mechanic!
Having honed his skills working at a number of garages across the Island
over the past 20 years, expert mechanic Paul Nixon realised the dream of a
lifetime six months ago by launching out into business on his own.
Paul went straight from school
into a two-year college course
in mechanics before starting
an apprenticeship at Calbourne
Garage and then went on to
work for several other local
garages, including Westridge and
Carisbrooke.
He says his plan was always to
have his own business, and last
autumn he finally took that huge
leap of faith by launching Nixon
Automotive Services. However,
the gamble seems to be paying
off and he’s already seeing good
results, with a strong and growing
customer base.
As a one-man operator, Paul
says he can offer a much more
personal service, as well as keenly
competitive pricing rates.
“People like the fact that they
actually get to talk to the person
who is doing the work on their
car, rather than going through a
reception desk” he says.
He might be a one-man band,
but Paul’s garage unit at the
Riverway Industrial Estate in
Newport is kitted out with all
the latest diagnostic equipment,
and he has another experienced
part-time mechanic he can call on
when needed.
Prices are super-competitive, and
include his current special offers
such as an air-conditioning service
for £35 and a full service at £135
for vehicle engines under 2 litres.
As Paul points out, springtime
is the ideal time to get the car’s
air conditioning unit checked
over, rather than waiting until you
actually start using it and find a
problem.
“I also do an interim service at
£75 which includes a general
check of the vehicle and oil and
filter change” he says. “With main
service intervals on many cars now
being quite long, many customers
like this interim servic e to give
themselves peace of mind”.
As Paul’s reputation grows, he’s
finding more and more of his work
coming from personal word-of-
mouth recommendations – not to
mention the glowing testimonials
on the garage’s Facebook page.
