Hose Rhodes Dickson Auction Rooms Rex Gully & Rebecca Ball: COLLECTABLE BOOKS The world of collectable books is enormously wide ranging, with everything from antiquarian volumes to modern first editions piquing the interest of keen bibliophiles, depending on their area of specialism. At Hose Rhodes Dickson in recent months we have seen books from both ends of the age spectrum far exceeding their guide prices, and demonstrating that it is still possible to unearth a hidden gem in a charity shop. Ask an expert! AUCTION REPORT As we move further into spring, thoughts turn towards the garden and spending more time outdoors. Both our vendors and purchasers have clearly been in the mood for spring cleaning their gardens, as we have seen plenty of gardenalia and exterior furniture arriving for auction, and just as quickly being snapped up and off to a new home. Chimney pots, rhubarb forcers and decorative stoneware of all shapes and sizes are just some of the items which have proved popular in recent sales. We have also commenced our programme of outdoor auctions for this year, and look forward to the wide array of agricultural machinery, motor vehicles and gardenalia which will go under the hammer in the coming months. You will see pictured below an apparently unremarkable copy of Ian Fleming’s ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’. However, once you discover that this first edition, published in 1965, is one of very few remaining in the world with the embossed golden gun design on the cover, hidden underneath a very nondescript dust jacket, then you learn that it is a prized collector’s item worth over £4,000. As auctioneers, we regularly say that condition is key when it comes to maximising the value of an item. However, collectors were undeterred by the very poor state of a copy of the Geneva Bible dating from 1560 which sparked frenzied bidding due to its scarcity, and although it was some 400 years older than ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’, the resulting hammer price was almost identical. It is always worth investigating any volumes which may have been languishing unloved in a bookcase, as they could have a valuable story to tell.
