James Spence of James Spence and Colleagues Dental Surgeons , Ryde , discusses child toothache , healing nerves and avoiding extractions

We are able to save many decayed baby teeth and avoid hospital anaesthetic by placing a fine steel thimble over decayed baby teeth . This slows down the decay and protects the nerve , allowing it to recover until the baby tooth falls out and is replaced by the new adult tooth . ‘ 3M ’ Stainless Steel is used for its thinness and durability . In the USA , efforts to develop white versions all failed due to material fracture ; unlike fillings these ‘ 3M ’ crowns will not break . This ‘ Hall Crown Technique ’ has been developed in Dundee in the past decade and is ultra conservative ; most cases do not even need a local anaesthetic . The picture ( below ) features two Hall Crowns with the x-ray also showing how they hold the space for the developing adult teeth which can avoid the need for braces . Even more amazing is that we place them without taking impressions , and we also use them in adults who can ’ t cope with impressions for conventional crowns . Our Child Denplan patients who need these have them placed gently at no charge other than their monthly fee of £ 9.70 . In the past year we have placed some 200 such crowns and are happy to help your child even if they are not on Denplan , but do remember “ the sooner the better ” is an important maxim

if we are to avoid extractions in your child . In February we saw a new child patient for a second opinion who was in pain , with three large cavities and whose mother informed us extractions had been advised . She was treated successfully using a modified ‘ Hall Crown Technique ’ without injections , without pain and without extractions .
While we work mainly under Denplan if you have a young child who is in pain we are pleased to offer a same day consultation with a free of charge Hall Crown ( where applicable ) for a single fee of £ 90 ; remember “ the sooner the better ”. Better still is to bring your child as soon as they are born or even better come when you are expecting at no charge for dietary advice . By age two they will be keen to have their teeth checked and have any necessary preventive work done at only £ 6.70 monthly under our comprehensive junior Denplan scheme .
