ISLAND LIFE
APRIL / MAY 2016
A WORD
FROM THE
EDITOR
Everyone has their favourite time of the
year, and for us it’s most definitely this part
of late spring, with lambs gambolling in
the fields and all our favourite flowers –
the primroses, bluebells, forget-me-nots
and wood anemones – turning the banks
and hedgerows into a misty haze of pastel
colours.
May is also the month when the Hawthorn
produces its lovely frothy, cream blossom –
and in this issue you can read more about
this familiar tree that’s commonly known
as ‘May’, along with some of the ancient
traditions associated with May Day.
You’ll also find some fascinating Island
people featured in our big interviews this
issue.
Terence Willey is a character who may be
well known across the Island as a solicitor,
but few may know much about his early
family background in Reading, what exactly
makes him tick – or the fact that he rebelled
against a life as a retail manager to go into
the Law.
Another rebel is boat builder Tony
Mansbridge – who always knew he wanted
a life on the ocean wave and not the
professional career his parents and private
school planned for him. At 75 he’s still out
there with his sleeves rolled up, building
boats – and has a fund of colourful stories to
tell from his past.
Then there’s Ryde-based ceramic artist Sue
Paraskeva, who produces gorgeous tableware
for top-notch international clients and
exhibitions – and sometimes, smashes her
work on purpose! What’s all that about? Well,
settle down, read on and we will reveal all.
Along with all your usual favourite features
and fabulous photos of events across the
Island, this is another jam-packed issue.
Enjoy it with our compliments – and
do please continue to support our loyal
advertisers who make it all possible.
