FOOD Sweet memories E veryone has a favourite sweet from childhood – and the good news is that many of these can be found in the vintage collection at both Shanklin and Sandown Rock Shops. Lined up in their original vintage-style jars, you’ll find everything from stripey humbugs to cola cubes, tangy pineapple chunks, sherbet pips and old-fashioned cough sweets. And the flavours will be just the way you remember them, as many of the sweets are sourced from two of the UK’s oldest manufacturers, and made to original recipes. The Rock Shop, which opens seven days a week, is a magnet for children – but adults with a taste for nostalgia also love these classic sweets. In fact, you can choose a bespoke hamper featuring any combination of sweets, which makes the perfect gift for young and old alike. Telephone: 01983 862 950. A new spin on it T Oven ready S tanding still isn’t an option for traditional butcher Paul Murphy. Just 18 months since he launched his distinctive Victorianthemed shop in Shanklin, he’s still introducing new products – the latest being a range of delicious ready to cook dishes. With expert advice from Gerry Alton, Paul has put together recipes such as Pork and Beef Meatloaf, Pork and Cider Casserole, Chicken with Ginger, Lemon and Chilli, and a classic Liver and Bacon Casserole. These can be bought in small or large serving sizes, and come oven ready with a cooking time of around half an hour. Paul is hoping the ready meals will appeal to customers as strongly as the shop’s huge range of authentic sausages - now totalling around 120 recipes – and his traditional shop-made pork faggots.
