THE HIGH SHERIFF Picture supplied by The County Press High Sheriff's Diary Keep posted on what our High Sheriff has been up to recently... by Claire Locke Highlights of my year as High Sheriff I have enjoyed the most wonderful year in office as High Sheriff, meeting so many interesting people from all walks of life across the Island. We are lucky to have such a strong sense of community spirit here, and a thriving voluntary sector. I would like to thank everyone for being so welcoming and supportive. There have been so many special moments, but here are a few highlights. The High Sheriffs’ Trust When I started my year in office, I pledged to refinance and re-launch the High Sheriffs’ Trust, a small Island charity dedicated to community projects. With the generous support of individuals and businesses on the Island, we have been able to do this and in turn support all sorts of grass roots causes. Two I am particularly proud of are establishment of The First Lego League Club at Christ the King School in Newport, and the purchase of a hearing loop at Carisbrooke Castle Museum, as part of its outreach project. The High Sheriff’s Awards This annual event in March is when awards are presented to children and young people who have overcome adversity and gone on to be role models to others, and in some cases serve their community. We had more nominations this year than ever before so it was hard to choose the recipients. The 12 Award winners were truly inspiring in overcoming illness, disability and family bereavement and yet remaining cheerful, positive and caring for others. We all felt humbled hearing their stories. Business and Enterprise I chose this theme for my year as I feel it is important to encourage young people to consider a career in business or start their own enterprise. I spoke at the IOW College Enterprise Week about what I had learned from my own experience of working for myself, and have worked with the Chamber of Commerce to raise the prof
