ith spring cleaning in full swing, many people
are clearing out attics, cupboards and sheds in
the hope of finding buried treasure. Easter is
upon us, and as many thoughts turn towards chocolate
it would be superb if the spring clean turned up another,
altogether more remarkable, type of egg.
Faberge was the jeweller to the Imperial Family in
pre-revolutionary Russia, and was commissioned every
Easter to produce for the Tsarina a bejewelled and
bedazzling egg containing a hidden surprise, thereby
starting a tradition which would be adopted by other
wealthy clients. Given a free rein with the design, a
Faberge egg was crafted in precious metals and set with
precious stones, with each one more fantastical than
the last. Several eggs remain lost, having disappeared
during the time of the Revolution, but it is just possible
they could still be tucked away somewhere.
