Island glass still a winner We are particularly lucky on the Island to have had in our midst one of the world’s foremost studio glass manufacturers, Isle of Wight Glass. Based in St Lawrence and founded in 1972 by master glass maker and designer Michael Harris, the studio experimented with revolutionary techniques to produce myriad technicolour designs. Hose Rhodes Dickson recently offered for sale a sizeable collection of Isle of Wight Glass. Popular pieces included a striking ‘Sgraffito Jazz’ design vase and a ‘Kyoto’ pattern vase in an unusual white colourway. However, the pride of the collection was a vase in the ‘Undercliff Day’ pattern. This is a rarelyseen design which drew the interest of many collectors. The hammer eventually fell to an Island based enthusiast, demonstrating that the market for this 20th Century design classic is incredibly strong both at home and abroad. www.visitilife.com 41
