Internet bidding hits a new high
The weather having caused its usual
havoc meant that for the first time
in memory Island Auction Rooms had
to postpone their Antique and Modern
sales by a couple of days.
Warren Riches, Director of Island
Auctions, said: “We have to protect
the vendors so that the lots on offer
make the right kind of money. The
extra days’ viewing on the web and
in the rooms proved rather beneficial
with live internet bidding hitting a
new high.”

Island Auction Rooms now have
their fully illustrated catalogue on
four different Antique websites,
and coupled with the live bidding
and packed rooms, prices were very
buoyant. An example was the first lot
of the sale, a 19t h oil of dead game,
contested in the rooms and on four
phones to £650.
A rare fishing reel was contested by
five phone bidders, live on the net and
in the room up to £1,100. But gold,
jewellery and silver is still proving the
strongest sector in the market. And
one of the more local interest lots
were oils by the potter and artist John
Reilly, one making £870 and another
£480.
Warren added: “People thinking of
selling that unused item that is locked
in a safe, bank or cupboard, really
need to dig it out and let one of the
three experts at the Island Auction
Rooms take a look. With up to date
technology and low selling/buying
costs compared to the mainland rooms
we offer the best value and achieve
enviable results.”
