EQUESTRIAN Grand win for Fraser Several thousand spectators gathered at Ashey Farm for the ever-popular CBK Isle of Wight Grand National and Ashey Scurry. The ideal weather conditions allowed many spectators to picnic in the warm spring sunshine while enjoying the entertainment, and the Scurry attracted both an excellent entry and one of the largest attendances in many years. The Grand National was won by Fraser Marshall from Sussex, riding Des who just pipped Charlie Deucsch on ‘Eskimo Jack’ to lift the prestigious Blackgang Chine Cup. Fraser’s three children, Charlie Marshall, 14, Izzie Marshall, 12, and Alfie Marshall, 10, then completed a first for the event, taking the top three places in the Junior Ashey Scurry. The day was not without its mishaps, and Elaine Bissell was taken to St Mary’s Hospital after her horse fell on her in the senior Ashey Scurry, sponsored by FH Winter and Sons, and won by Caroline Dennis on Hot Chipotle. Sam Biles, Director of CBK said: “Once again we are pleased to have been associated with the Scurry being one of, if not, the largest countryside events on the Island. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the spectacle and to watch such good racing.” The course, kindly provided by Alan Aylett, was also in excellent condition allowing for a fine day’s racing. 122 www.visitislandlife.com Fraser Marshall, winner of the IW Grand National on Des, with the Blackgang Chine Cup Pictures supplied by Martin Wilkins - wightphotography.com
