GARDENING
decision was made not to grow
these varieties to help control this
devastating disease. Thompson’s will
be growing alternative varieties of
plants, so look out for new additions.
There are New Guinea busy lizzies in
six packs, phlox, mini antirrhinums,
nemesia and verbenas, as well as
petunias for bedding and hanging
baskets.
There is much talk about the
decreasing numbers of the humble
bee. Bees are vital for pollination and
there is a lot of work happening on the
Island to encourage and support the
bee population. We can all help as our
gardens are a vital haven for bees and
other beneficial insects.
By growing plants that attract bees
we will improve the pollination for our
own crops and will be helping the bees
to survive. Have a range of plants that
flower throughout the year. Lavender,
sweet peas and many herbs are some of
their favourites. Look out for the bee
logo when you visit the garden centre,
as they indicate bee friendly plants.
