Hugh Bonneville recently commented on
the ‘terrific food’ served at The Royal. And
it does seem that the island is gaining
a reputation as a discerning gourmet
destination. Chefs creating a stir include
Robert Thompson at the Hambrough, Justin
Brown at Farringford and of course Alan
Staley and Dan Maskell at The Royal. So, it
was interesting to hear that The Royal have
recently introduced a seasonally changing
set lunch menu. Dishes include bubble
and squeak with a perfectly cooked duck
egg, home-cooked Moor Farm ham with
creamed potatoes, savoy cabbage and a
grain mustard sauce and to finish indulgent
crème brulee or classic trifle. This is a great
way to experience delicious modern British
cooking amid elegant surroundings – rather
