food Island Life - April/May 2011 The Little Gloster restaurant is growing in reputation The Little Gloster continues to go from strength to strength, and judging from the response of satisfied customers the Cowes - born owner and head chef Ben Cooke and his partner Holly Siddons are looking to the future with confidence. The family-run restaurant, bar and boutique B&B, serves modern British food with Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences. Exceptional daily fish specials & locally-sourced food are on offer at the restaurant in Gurnard, just a five-minute drive from Cowes. Ben's Michelin experience, serving exquisite cuisine on some of the world's premier super yachts has inspired the straightforward and sleek menu. A Scandinavian, minimalist and refreshing approach The Little Gloster offers a mixture of high-end cuisine that is simple yet delicious. Recipes were taught to him by his Danish grandmother who was once one of the Island's most famous hoteliers, running the now sadly departed Gloster Hotel. "The menu is simple and yet elegant, providing for a mix of tastes," said Ben. "I could have made the whole thing fussier, but I don't think that is what the Island needs or wants, or more to the point what I like to cook. "Our first year's business and strong Island support reassures us that we are fulfilling our dream of offering Islanders exquisite non-pretentious, well-priced food and drink, in a warm and friendly ambience." This home-from-home, popular with fellow Islanders Ellen Macarthur & Alan Titchmarsh, is the perfect venue for a quiet meal. It is also ideal to celebrate a special occasion, wedding reception or simply unwind with a glass of wine. Ben and Holly intend to make the most of their unprecedented setting by investing in various unique events throughout the coming months, starting with a Champagne (& Real Ale) English Afternoon Tea to celebrate The Royal Wedding. Sunday BBQs offering exquisite alfresco dining, as well as Fortnightly Friday evening Music and Food celebrations from Classical to Acoustic Guitar. They are presenting two Scandinavian B&B bedrooms designed by Ben’s Danish grandmother and matriarch of the family. Decorated with simple and solid elegance, the rooms offer unsurpassed views out to sea, and a breakfast worth booking the room for in itself. Instead, you could always experience it for yourself by booking a table for their irresistible brunch served from 9am to 12 noon at weekends. The ultimate Island treat or cure to the night before.
