The human body is an amazing
piece of machinery and will
grow into what you ask of
it! Statistics show that over
50% of the population are
overweight. However why
does it matter? Why should we
bother when there are so many
other pressures in life and so
many demands on our time?
We are, on the whole, living
longer and most people would like
to stay as well as possible. Being
overweight is not helpful. It creates
long term wear and tear, along with
the potential for causing a catalogue
of health problems.
If we take the analogy of a car,
our metabolic engine is muscle,
which burns calories, just as a car
engine would petrol. Fat is the
fuel store, holding energy reserves
like a petrol tank. Our modern
day difficulties come about because
fuel (calories) is so readily available
in large amounts, but we engage
in insufficient physical activity to
balance this consumption.
A huge number of those hoping
to lose weight will go on shortterm shock diets. Chemically, once
in starvation mode, the body finds
it easier to convert energy from
muscle tissue than fat, so although
we lose some fat, we also lose
muscle. This means that our engine
capacity drops and the weight just
starts to pile on again once we stop

the diet.
Dropping your calorific intake
moderately and increasing your
exercise will achieve a long-term
balance. However exercise needs to
be right for you, and should be fun
and motivational. It will encourage
the production of endorphins,
which well improve your feeling of
wellbeing.
