Polar night or kaamos is a natural phenomenon seen in Northern and Southern hemisphere. In Northern Hemisphere polar nights are seen from September to March and in Southern Hemisphere from March to September During polar night the Sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. Although kaamos is the darkest period of the year, it is rarely pitch black.

Norway might take the credit of the polar night but it is seen in lots of places in Northen hemisphere. For example Finland, Sweden, Russia, Canada, Greenland and parts of Alaska. In the southern parts of Finland there is no polar night, but the days are still short. For example, in Helsinki the length of the shortest day of the year is less than six hours.
