B. College Applications

College admissions staff are reviewing thousands of college applications during college application season. They are looking for strong applications that gives them insight into your child on academic and personal levels. Your child’s college application must stand out from the other applicants by including the following items in the college application.

1. Evidence of leadership skills.

Colleges are looking for leaders. Help your child to develop his or her leadership skills by joining organizations and serving in a role such as project leader or organizing an event. Also, your child can do independent work such as volunteering in the community or starting a business.

2. Strong college

admissions essays.

College admissions essays are important to college admissions staff because these essays reveal important information about the student. Specifically, colleges are looking for students who can communicate well. Encourage your child to work with his or her teachers and mentors to develop thoughtful essays that meet all of the requirements. Encourage your child to give examples instead of simply stating “I am...”. Lastly, offer to proofread your child’s college admissions essays to catch any errors.
