five years time?
“I think Tier 2 and 3
players will still have a role to
play for localised content and
for their own content, I don’t think they will
just be a transit pipe. It would be nice if
formats came down to one or at most two, but
I think that’s unlikely within five years,” says
Kirby.
“The vendors now sell CDNs on a per Gb
basis and customers can cooperate and buy
capacity on a use licence basis. We have one
customer who licenses over a Tb, but it moves
around over five or six time zones,” declares
McEvilly.
“Low tier operators and ISPs have to find
ways to survive for the benefit of subscribers
and content providers, otherwise where will
the investment come from to improve
networks? There are big numbers of small
operators who between them have access to a
very large number of subscribers. Standards
will help and they have to find ways to
monetise the delivery of globally provided
services,” comments Mikeladze.
