Of course, Maier has a vested interest –
his company is a long established industry
leader in high-quality remote control
design and manufacture – but it is
certainly true that the vision
of smart phone and tablet
control of the TV has barely
come to pass. “Leave aside

reason is that the remote is
a public device, for the entire family, and
the smart phone or tablet is private and
personal to the owner.”
With recent research confirming that
viewing of the main TV set in the home
remains by far the dominant means of TV
consumption, the remote control has to be
an open device, available for all to use. But
that doesn’t mean it cannot also be
personal to each user.
