In my role as Editor-in-Chief of ION Indie Magazine, I am FOREVER seeking coverage for our readers that not only provides a
platform for Independent artists to get their “day in the sun”, but also, compelling stories that will INSPIRE. I found a glittering
jewel in the red clay of Georgia—where I now call HOME--and that diamond is ATLANTA MUSIC PROJECT.
Although just founded in 2010, Atlanta Music Project is a shining example of what unwavering spirit and unbridled passion
can achieve. AMP provides intensive, tuition-free, music education for underserved youth--right in their own backyard. And
AMP is on a mission…and that is to promote social change by providing Atlanta’s youth the opportunity to learn and perform
music in orchestras and choirs. A tall order, but these tenacious folks were tutored in the school of “Can Do”…
As a former choreographer and musician that worked closely with the neighborhood youth in Chicago, I felt an immediate
“pull” toward this hard-working dedicated organization and the dynamic people that had the vision to build something that
will enhance their communities. I also felt moved to bring AMP to the readers of ION Indie Magazine, knowing that many will
find a fellowship in the DIY spirit that embodies AMP…for it is the same that drives Independent musicians—and the hearts of
artists--everywhere.
Currently in its sixth year of programming and serving 200 students at four sites, AMP provides all students with an instrument,
a teaching artist, classes and numerous public performance opportunities. AMP does not hold entrance auditions—all are
welcome. The only requirement is commitment to attending all classes. AMP’s programs include: the AMP Orchestra, AMPlify-the choral program of the Atlanta Music Project and the AMP Academy--providing advanced musical training to AMP’s most
talented and dedicated students. AMP students have performed at the Woodruff Arts Center, the Rialto Center for the Arts
and Spivey Hall. In 2015, Clayton State University established the Atlanta Music Project Endowed Scholarships, which
provides funds for tuition, room and board to all Atlanta Music Project students who attend Clayton State University as music
majors or music minors.
So why the “Knock, Knock” joke that precedes this article? Well, this Editor apparently was “scooped” by RYAN SEACREST.
Yep, THAT Ryan Seacrest…along with the new FOX television series starring Ryan Seacrest called “Knock Knock Live”.
Apparently the door-knocking powers-that-be (the creators of AMERICAN IDOL and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE) felt their
spirit moved by Atlanta Music Project…and it landed them at the AMP doorstep--and what a “housewarming gift” was
bestowed! Make no mistake…this wasn’t of the fruit basket or apple pie variety…very neighborly indeed, Mr. Seacrest…wellplayed! (Note to self: There is no way I can “one up” Seacrest). Anyway…
According to the KNOCK KNOCK LIVE website: “Each
week, Ryan Seacrest presents the show from our
“mission control” studio. From there, he guides a team
of co-hosts who show up completely unannounced at
various locations across the country. In every episode,
several lucky viewers all over the United States will get
the coveted door knock, and once the doors
open…BAM…they’re on live television in front of millions
of people! The show could come to your school, your work
or your own front door – you never know where we’ll be
knocking or when we’re going to strike!”

And STRIKE they did…and faster than you can say “Avon
Calling”, there was the television crew--toting a bounty of
prizes that I’m quite confident were MUCH appreciated
by this most worthy nonprofit.

I was honored to interview the Co-founder and Executive Director of AMP, DANTES RAMEAU and learn more about his vision,
garner some insight into AMP and hear more about the “knock heard ‘round the world”….
