By Leslie Hadaway Photo credit: Dallas Nagata White Photography I was so stoked to recently see this up and coming band in Charlotte, NC, at AMOS’ SOUTHEND. I had heard so many great things about KINGS OF SPADE, and they certainly did not disappoint! I had the privilege to watch poetry in motion; to hear sweet melodic nothings sail around like a leaf on the wind. My head started swimming! Lead singer, KASI NUNES’ vocals remind me of JANIS JOPLIN, BILLIE HOLIDAY-and even more modern artists like ADELE and the late AMY WINEHOUSE. I’ve been listening to Kings of Spade’s “Way She Goes” for a while now. The soulful, funky and beautiful Blues riffs just come pouring through my ear buds like psychedelic rainbows that completely hypnotize and ensnare your senses. “Strange Bird” is one if my favorite songs from this release. The song talks about not being afraid to be who you are, living life on your own terms; being your own person. We rock to the beat of our own drum. “This Child” is another favorite of mine. Lyrically, it has a JOAN JETT feel. It’s got a “Bad Reputation” vibe to it--especially in the lyric “You buy me dresses when I play with guns. Swing for the fences. Ain’t gonna tame this child“. The song is rebellious in its nature, but at the same time, sweetly lamenting--while saying “I’m gonna do whatever I want to do and you’re not gonna stop me!”
