As I continue to cover the music scene here in El Paso, Texas, mostly metal, I’m starting to see most of these national acts make a full circle in regards to touring. It seems like every two years they all make it back here. That was certainly the case on June 22 nd at none other than Tricky Falls, when SUFFOCATION invaded our little Southwestern city. Hailing from Long Island, New York, Suffocation started up in ‘88, with their first release being in ’91. In the past 26 years, they’ve produced 6 more full-length albums and 5 videos. They have had numerous lineup changes over the years, 8 to be exact, but from what I could see, they now have one tight band. One of the upsides of being part of the working media, is that I get to go backstage, depending on how cool the TM is. Thus, opportunities do present where I get to hang out with the band before the show, and I must say you could not ask for any more cooler guys that TERRACE HOBBS and DEREK BOYER, lead guitar and bass player, respectively. This type of scenario just adds to my comfort level when covering the show -- I mean it doesn’t get any better when these guys hit the stage and I’m standing in the pit waiting to go to work, and I look up and I am on the receiving end of a wink or a nod? Close to 500 people paid to see this epic death metal act on a Thursday night and did they get their money's worth! The audience was on fire with classic Suffocation tunes such as “Return to the Abyss,” “Bloodchurn,” and my personal favorite, “Bind, Torture, Kill,”…which could have something to do with the BTK killer back in the day, just a guess. Good luck finding this caliber of music on your radio, but if you are a fan, you just can’t go wrong with a hot dose of New York style death metal…would you like fries with that? www.suffocationofficial.com www.facebook.com/suffocation
