El Paso, Texas, has its fair share of local Metal bands, believe me, I know! And there are just a few that really seem to stand out above the rest…one of those bands is IN WAKES. I have covered this act several times over the past few months and it never fails to amaze me how the audience reacts to their set. It’s always high-energy and fast-paced, to say the least. Opening acts have nothing but positive things to say about In Wakes' performance--I have personally heard that over and over again. The band consists of JEREMY SYON on guitar, RUDY CARDENAS on bass, ETHAN DEPREW on drums and HUGO RODRIGUEZ supplying vocals. Ages of everyone range from 19 to 22 years old. They have been together for a year and a half, with the exception of Ethan Depew, who just recently replaced the old drummer. Ethan has been with the band for only the past two months, but according to his bandmates, fits like a glove. Influences for the boys are national acts such as WHITECHAPEL, LAMB OF GOD, PANTERA and ERRA…and make no mistake, it rings true in their performance. During our interview, I asked how they would label their style of music--they call it "DJent/Hard Core/Metal Core”. It’s important to them that you have fun at their shows--as well as they do when opening--they stay for the entire show. They feel this is supporting the local music scene here in El Paso and I couldn't agree more. I have seen opening acts leave the venue before the headliner takes the stage and I never did understand that. As far as their future plans, there is some studio time planned as well as a Fall Tour in the works, but as I look at my events calendar, these guys are burning up the local scene with shows stacked on shows. Needless to say, their management team is on point, never taking the foot off the gas! In closing, it has been my pleasure covering In Wakes--they are just a great bunch of guys that have their heads in the right place. And with that said, with time, they will be a power to be reckoned with here in the El Paso local Metal scene.
