When asked about Independent artists, he focused on today’s music market and said that “things can change tomorrow” and to “start to build your catalog”. According to Garth, “The record labels were on their way out until streaming came along. Now whomever has the largest catalog wins.” Garth also said that the labels that are left-Sony, Universal, Warner--they will be here forever until some other conglomerate comes and buys their catalog. He went on to say that he “couldn’t imagine who that would be because they are making more money than they ever have”. He was firm when he said that you would have to give up a lot to be with a label like that--and that you might be better being Independent. I did hear that he said that he wanted to collaborate with MILEY CYRUS, so I asked him about that. He did chuckle and said, “That would be cool because it would be like signing with my daughter because she is right around my daughter’s age--but LADY GAGA--try to catch up with her--saddle up and try to hang on to her! Those two, Miley and Lady Gaga, came into the industry because who they were and what they wore.” He went on to say, “The reason that they are so dangerous is because we are just beginning to discover how talented they are.” Just like Trisha, Garth is as real as they come--jeans, sneakers, snapback and sweatshirt--he came in unassuming and genuinely happy to chat and offer his wisdom. And the sum of this, equals…two…amazing human beings, that is! ION Senior Photojournalist Daniel Johnson would like to acknowledge ERIKA CANNAVINO for taking the time to share some of her valuable writing tips with him. Like Garth would say…much obliged! www.garthbrooks.com • www.trishayearwood.com
