Growth from your heart

Barbara J. Cormack AFC AFM

The definition of growth is the act or process or a manner of growing, development and/or gradual increase; or it could be the development from a simpler to a more complex stage, or it could be something that has grown or developed by or as if by a natural process.

I was recently watching a previous series (2012) of MasterChef USA and the winner of this cooking competition was someone who was blind. Christine Hà suffers from neuromyelitis optica, where a person’s own immune system attacks the optic nerves and Christine eventually lost her sight by 2007. Yet five years later she won a cooking programme. Gordon Ramsay talked about her palate and about how she learnt how to use her other senses to not only produce the most incredible edible food as well as plating it sensationally.

Losing her sight did not stop her cooking. In fact it helped her develop her other senses to be able to continue with her food dream. There were times during the show when restauranteur Joe Bastianich doubted her ability to cook because he didn’t believe that someone who was blind could cook, or cook that well. But! cooking from her heart took her from being one of 30,000 contestants to the top position.

Not the easiest thing in the world! Following your heart.

As children we all have dreams. We all believe that we can have and do anything we want. But can we?

I saw a wonderful quote on Facebook recently which said ‘Listen to your own voice, your own

soul. Too many people listen to the noise of the world instead of themselves’.

This is where your own growth starts! In your own heart! In your own head! It’s very easy to let the noise from the world around you drive you through your life.

I remember when I first started out as a coach when a delegate on one of my workshops asked me if by focusing on her own life and her own dreams, she was being selfish.

It’s a balance! Are you being selfish by wanting the best from your own life? Are you letting yourself down? Are you letting others down?

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma –which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.’ Steve Jobs

So I truly believe that if you want to live your life from your heart you can. I know from my own experience that it’s not easy. In 2010 I had the opportunity to live the life I was living or live the life of my dreams. My marriage was not strong and one episode specifically showed me exactly how not great it was. I spent many hours over many days just wondering what to do next.

I remember a very clear episode when I was sitting on a beach on the island of Madeira and I suddenly realised that I had to live my own life. Did I want to carry on living on someone else’s life or did I want to live my own? It’s very easy to carry on living someone else’s life – it’s easy – it’s comfortable – and above all you are not hurting or upsetting someone else.

The difference between who you are

and what you want to be

is what you do!
