“ On smaller occasional pieces and decorative items , we have a much broader palette and have more freedom to use rosewoods ( Dalbergia spp .), zebrawood ( Microberlinia brazzavillensis ), or Persian yew ( Taxus spp .) wood . Sometimes we select certain veneers because we want a busy decorative grain pattern , like an olive ash burl ( Fraxinus excelsior ). Other times , it ’ s for their natural color ,” Mitchell says . “ When we introduced the Persian yew wood New Yorker table , we decided on a clear lacquer as our standard finish . We did the same with an accent table – the top panel is Makassar ebony ( Diospyros spp .) with a clear coat so you can see the full beauty of the wood . We do stain zebrawood , however , because it gives us the best look .”
