“ The sustainable bubinga and redwood were great choices . They have a sort of left-brain , right-brain balance , very pleasing to the eye and very practical .”

In addition to world-class cuisine , the Sierra Mar restaurant offers a stunning view . Cantilevered glass walls reach out over the Pacific with little visible support . Wood , metal and stone elements lend a sense of security to the otherwise breath-taking horizon .
The real beauty of these designs is the feeling they create , a connection with wisdom and beauty greater than any one individual . But you don ’ t have to “ get it ” to enjoy it . The interiors were purposely designed to be lovely , but also simple and unobtrusive . “ We used wood , quartz and steel to have things that go back into the elements , to keep the eye neutral ,” says Freed . “ Originally Mickey considered using cherry in the interiors of the units , but cherry gets darker with age . Redwood and bubinga are photovoltaic . The bubinga actually has a little bit of electricity , it catches the light . Plus , the exotic species extend the reach of the design consciousness .”
The Sierra Mar restaurant is also graced with exotic wood , glass and steel design , giving the opposing impressions of being cantilevered over the cliffs and , at the same time , protected . For the ceiling , Muennig took simple four by four beams and cut them to different thicknesses to create levels of dimension . A fixture of the restaurant is the bar , a unique piece made from the highly burled wood of a mutant mahogany ( Swietenia macrophylla ) tree an importer found felled in the South American rain forest . “ It was so gorgeous that we bought the whole tree . It has great soul ,” says Freed . “ Instead of decaying in the rain forest , it has this whole new life .”
