Most major movie studios and workshops have their own lumber yards that sell material to different projects on their lots . This approach streamlines the delivery for both the distributors and the end users .
Bowline has personally been selling lauan to the movie studios for 25 years , primarily in quarter-inch 4 foot by 10 foot panels . This is a special industry dimension , as most plywood comes in 4 by 8 foot panels . The bigger pieces mean fewer seams in the finished sets . To better serve their market , once Somerville Plywood receives the lauan , they put a primer on a large percentage of the sheets , a process that saves the craftspeople a step in the painting or papering process .
From his perspective as a materials supplier , Bowline echoes the sentiment of the craftspeople that no other material can play the important role in Hollywood set building that is lauan ’ s masterpiece performance . “ What happens is that every substitute they have tried to use has some issue . It is either too heavy , it does not lay flat , or it is hard to nail . Some products damage easily . If the ends get bopped , they flake off . Professionals just can ’ t use materials like that , they simply don ’ t work ,” says Bowline .
