The National Marine Manufacturers Association is over 1,400 members strong , with member companies representing “ every conceivable product used by recreational boaters .” It is estimated that 80 percent of marine products used in North America are produced by NMMA members . NMMA is dedicated to creating , promoting , and protecting an environment where its members can achieve success through excellence in manufacturing , in selling , and in servicing their customers . Here are the key purchasing and demographic trends likely to impact recreational boating and their use of imported wood products in the near future .
n Boaters continued to purchase slightly larger , better equipped boats in 2005 , increasing the average boat price by 8 percent compared to 2004 and total sales to $ 11.5 billion .
n Three of four current boat owners have average household incomes under $ 100,000 .
n Nearly 68 percent of current boat owners and 66 percent of past boat owners had a boating experience as a child .
n An estimated 51 percent of current participants enjoy cruising , while 43 percent enjoy fishing and 31 percent enjoy sightseeing and sunbathing .
“ Historically , boat sales are highly correlated with changes in consumer confidence and the GDP ,” Thom Dammrich , NMMA president explains . “ Research indicates 2005 was a steady year for the boating industry despite concerns surrounding how increased fuel prices might impact boat sales and boating participation .”
