“Architects have started to specify ipé quite a bit in the last year or
two. They like it because it looks like mahogany when it’s installed, rich
and dark, and lasts at least 40 years even in the sun. That’s important
around here, because the UV rays are pretty extreme. If we can get 25
or 30 years out of deck lumber, that’s a fantastic product for us.
“We don’t finish any of our decks; our company just leaves any
staining to the painting company on site. I’ve built a small deck of ipé
in my front yard and finished it with a clear coat, and it really looks
great. I wouldn’t put any kind of color on this product because its
natural color is so beautiful.”
