He’s a big fan of the 1950s and 60s; he loves the simplicity of design and the beauty of the wood.” Custom woodworker Kevin Lamers is in the midst of building the cabinetwork in his parents’ new home in North Fort Myers, Florida. The house is a perfect reflection of the easy-going nature of his parents, Ken, a commercial architect, and Mary, a kindergarten teacher – com- fortable, open and peaceful. A small pool lies just off the living room, and what was originally supposed to be an attic storage space was con- verted at the last minute into a small room perfect for contemplation and relaxing. “We were going to wall it off from the great room, but it got such great light in the afternoon we decided to turn it into a small space to spend quiet time,” says Mary. All of the kitchen and casework is being done in natural sapele and African mahogany. “We had talked about finding something like rift-sawn fir with vertical grain,” says Ken. “We also talked about anigre, but when we saw the pro- nounced vertical grain and color of the sapele, we fell in love with it. “I looked at three different samples of African mahogany before I found the one I really wanted,” says Kevin. “I was looking for a nice com- bination of the strong straight sapele grain and a solid mahogany frame around the doors and drawer fronts. We were originally framing the doors just for strength and to edge the sapele plywood. I was going to use a quarter-inch of the African mahogany, but I found that the three- quarter inch edge really shows off the hardwood accent and gives the cabinets a little more flavor.
