In addition to Black Bear Lodge, Johnston Architecture has
used imported wood species in many high-profile projects.
“Imported woods are more available
than they used to be. We see more
requests for exotic woods, because
clients are more aware of them.”
HENRY JOHNSTON
In addition to the Lacewood, Douglass
Fir, Caribbean Heart Pine, Cherry and Birch
can be found in the interior of Black Bear
Lodge. Overall, though, Johnston says the
lodge was kept very simple, and has not
been “fussed up” in any way.
This was Johnston Architecture’s first log
home, and the experience proved to be very
positive. Henry says he and his son found it
a pleasure to work with the imported
woods, and interesting to learn the
technology of log homes.
“Today, most buildings are systems; you
don’t really see what you’re getting once
they’re finished. A log home is a very
honest home in the sense of what-you-see
is-what-you-get. It is what it is.” IW
