Dear Editor,

I believe Juliet was too young to get married in the first place. After all she was only thirteen. Getting married that soon cannot have a good affect on a girl so young. I remember when I was thirteen and was still figuring out who I was. If I would have had to add a husband into the mix, that would have been awful. It is hard enough gaining responsibility for yourself as a teenager, but to add the extra pressure of being responsible for a man at thirteen is just ridiculous. She was still being taken care of by a nurse after all. All the weight of a husband and her parent pushing another man ended in death. It was just too much for that young of a girl. The stress of getting married mostly came from her parents. An example was when her mother was talking about getting marriage right before they had a ball. Juliet herself said she had not even dreamed about it yet, probably because she was not ready for it.

Then the idea newly presented, she fell in love and suggested it to Romeo. This also was the parents fault for Romeo could have courted her longer if it had not been for the fight going on between the two families. Then the parents came pushing Paris on her after her cousin died, forcing her to choose between loyalty to her husband or to her father. This all could have been avoided if Capulet had not been so quick to marry her off. With all the stress of loyalty to which man made the girl considers suicide. In the end seeing her husband dead beside her she takes the dagger and kills herself. So editor, I believe that girls should not even consider getting married to a boy until they are eighteen. Thirteen is just way too young for marriage. A person needs to be able to take care of themselves before they add on the responsibility of another person.

Sincerely

Shantell Gamlen
