ENGINES – TIGERCAT

Next generation engines hit US , Europe

Knowing new diesel emissions standards were approaching in the United States and Europe , Tigercat undertook a wide-ranging project to update its engine technology to meet the challenge

After an exhaustive technical development programm , Tigercat has introduced Tigercat FPT engines in North America and Europe in 2013 .

Tigercat FPT engines are equipped with a second-generation common rail fuel injection system , allowing them to achieve top performance in terms of load response , maximum torque and top power with minimum fuel consumption . To date , over 2,800 machines equipped with Tigercat FPT engines have been shipped . Tigercat FPT engines have proven themselves extremely well in the field – with excellent fuel efficiency and great uptime .
Power and performance are well matched to the various applications of the machines . Tigercat now administers the warranty , parts and service for the engines meaning more dealer empowerment . The result is increased uptime and a better experience for Tigercat customers .
“ We all know well that in forestry , lost production is never made up ,” Tigercat said . “ Our customer service department and the dealer network take machine uptime very seriously .”
Tigercat uses three models of the Tigercat FPT engine to meet different needs – the N45 , N67 and C87 .
The Tigercat FPT N45 engine is a 4.5 liter , four-cylinder workhorse used on the highly successful 234B log loader .
One concern operators initially expressed about the use of a fourcylinder engine was the increased risk of vibration and engine noise . The N45 engine solves this problem using a solution found on high-end automobile engines for many years – balancer shafts . These cancel out engine vibrations and make for a quieter , more comfortable work environment for operators and improvements in overall reliability .
The majority of Tigercat machines are powered by the Tigercat FPT N67 engine – including drive-to-tree feller bunchers , skidders , forwarders and some track carriers – which results in excellent commonality of spare parts and service across machines .
The highly versatile N67 is a 6.7 liter , six-cylinder engine that supports a wide range of torque curves that can be tailored to many

forestry applications . It provides high-power density for its size , which allowed Tigercat engineers to maximize service access while not sacrificing operator lines of sight over large engine enclosures .
Finally , when the highest power and torque are required for machines such as the highperformance LX830D feller buncher , the Tigercat FPT C87 delivers . The C87 is a robust six-cylinder , 8.7 liter engine with top power , fast-load response , high-power density together with the low fuel consumption and
reliability .
The C87 easily handles the demanding duty cycle of the LX830D , which requires fast hydraulic multifunctioning to cope with running the closed-loop drive , levelling base , Tigercat ER boom and disc saw felling head .
Tigercat FPT emission technology is simple and reliable , meeting Tier 4f emission standards without the complexities of a variable geometry turbocharger , EGR system or diesel particulate filter . The key is the selective catalyst reduction ( SCR ), which converts the harmful components of the exhaust gas stream into

water , nitrogen and carbon dioxide .
It does this by injecting Diesel Exhaust Fluid ( DEF ) into the exhaust stream , which causes a chemical reaction that turns harmful nitrogen oxides ( NOx ) into carbon dioxide and water .
Based on the positive experience , it was a natural progression to begin to add Tigercat FPT Tier 2 engine options to all the latest models . This gives all markets worldwide access to the latest and greatest machines as well as what Tigercat considers to be the best power plant for forestry
The Tigercat FPT N67 engine installation on the 880D logger provides excellent service access as well as plenty of power
and off road industrial applications in the industry .
Tigercat has been working hard to train dealer technicians throughout the world . Tigercat is shipping E-series skidders , D-series loaders , C-series forwarders , E-series drive-to-tree feller bunchers , the 875 logger and the various 822D , 845D and 855D carriers to Australia , New Zealand , Russia , South Africa and throughout South America .
Tigercat FPT Tier 2 and Tier 4f engines offer fast load response , low operating costs and highpower density , combined with excellent fuel economy .
