LUMBER PROCESSING NEWS
Norra Timber buys Microtec CT log scanner
represents a huge advance in
technology, perhaps the biggest
thing to happen in the industry
over the past 30 to 40 years. It
puts us at the absolute cutting
edge of research,” explains Norra
CEO Pär Lärkeryd. “Since both our
sawmill managers, Stig Grundberg
and Johan Oja, have been leading
figures in the development of
this technology, we now have an
opportunity to take a leap forward
that will leave our competitors
playing catch-up for some time to
come,” states Lärkeryd

Norra Group an expanding forest
company owned by 17,000 private
forest owners has decided to
fit their sawmill in Sävar with a
Microtec CT Log, in order to further
increase the value of each log - at
an infeed speed of 180 meters per
minute.
At every sawmill, the dream
has always been to be able to see
inside the log before it is sawn.
Why? Because saw logs are
a biological raw material whose
properties vary a great deal. To
make best use of the raw material,
it is therefore a huge advantage to
know the log’s properties before
you decide how it will be sawn -
and that is where CT Log comes in.
Norra’s installation of a
Microtec CT Log scanner at Sävar
Sawmill is the first of its kind in
Scandinavia and the first ever to be
fully integrated into the saw line
to directly control the breakdown
process.
This investment of around
SEK 30 million is being made in
rader
conjunction with the previously
announced refit of the saw line
itself. These two investment
projects will give Sävar Sawmill
one of the most modern saw lines
in the world.
“My warmest congratulations to
Norra for choosing groundbreaking
CT technology to accompany them
into the future of sawmilling. We
are very happy that Sweden, being
such an important country in
matters of wood processing, acts
as a pioneer introducing this new
technology.
We are looking forward to
cooperating with Norra, our local
partner LOAB and international
partners which are taking part
in this project”, states Federico
Giudiceandrea, Microtec CEO.
Microtec’s sixth CT Log
installation No rra’s CT Log will be
the sixth CT Log running worldwide.
There are five CT Logs already in
operation: two in Europe and three
in America.

cutting pattern that maximises
overall resale value of all boards

waste. CT Log is the only scanner
capable of giving a complete 3D
reconstruction of all inner features
of a log.
Annual production capacity:
About 210,000 m³ sawn timber.
Bandsaw line for all timber
dimensions.
Raw material: About 60 %
redwood, 40 % whitewood.
Planing: About 40,000 m³ in one
planing line. Capacity for lengths
up to 12 metres. The company
is quality and environmentally
certified in accordance with ISO
9001, ISO 14001 and PEFC. Norra
Timber is certified to deliver FSC
Controlled Wood.
Most modern sawmill
The precise scanning is combined
with the latest bandsaw technology
from Söderhamn Eriksson / USNR –
where the focus is on thin kerfs and
high speed - ensuring maximum
yield. “We want to recover as much
as possible of every log. We set a
target of doubling the speed and
halving the cut surfaces,” says
sawmill manager Stig Grundberg.
Sävar Sawmill
Sävar Sawmill specialises in the
production of high-quality redwood
and whitewood products. The
sawmill has excellent capacity
for planing and uses highquality
redwood and whitewood from
the counties of Västerbotten and
Ångermanland.
