LOGGING & BIOMASS NEWS ENCE awards SENER contract to build a new biomass plant Engineering and technology group SENER has signed a contract with ENCE Energía y Celulosa to build a new low-emission biomass electricity generation plant in its energy complex in Huelva, Spain. The contract signed is a turnkey arrangement whereby SENER will design, supply, build and commission the plant, as well as operate and maintain it during the first years of operation. The new facility will consist of an electricity generation plant using biomass from the forestry and farming industries. With a 40 MW gross nominal electricity output it will be one of the largest high-efficiency low-emission biomass renewable energy plants in Spain. The plant is projected to enter into operation in the 3Q 2019. Due to the variety of types of biomass to be used, the plant will be equipped with an advanced fuel handing system, both for incoming biomass and for its preparation and storage. The plant will also boast one of the best gas combustion and treatment systems, guaranteeing compliance with the demanding requirements of the new European standard, BREF (Best Available Techniques Reference), which establishes the best practices for the industry’s Large Combustion Plants in Europe. Sodra hits planting record for third consecutive autumn In autumn 2017, 6.7 million seedlings from Södra were planted. This represents an increase of 600,000 seedlings compared with autumn planting in 2016, and 1.9 million compared with 2015. In 2017, Södra supplied a total of 36.3 million seedlings. Södra has set a record during autumn planting for the third consecutive year. Not since after the storm years of 2005 and 2007 have so many seedlings been planted in the autumn as in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The success factors include increased digitisation and greater awareness of the benefits of autumn planting. “ We are delighted to have set a record for the third consecutive year. Our focus on more digitised production is starting to yield results in the form of higher volumes, and improved seedlings with more even quality. Forests are growing better and faster now, and the high volume of seedlings that are planted every autumn will ensure that this trend continues,” said Johan Jonsson, Head of Södra Skogsplantor. The benefits of planting early in the autumn are that the roots of the seedlings descend immediately into the soil, enabling strong growth in the following year. Of the seedlings supplied by Södra in the autumn, 90 percent are either untreated or protected with mechanical insecticides and therefore chemical-free. “ We see continued high demand for our mechanically protected seedlings, which is very positive for both the environment and forest growth. We now have twice the amount of forest as 100 years ago and today’s planting sites will form the basis for tomorrow’s bioeconomy, in which wood can be used to replace many other fossil fuels,” said Johan Jonsson. Hiab invests for a new installation centre in Meppel, Netherlands Hiab, part of Cargotec, is opening a new factory installation and competence centre in Meppel, the Netherlands, during the first quarter of 2018. The new centre will offer FrameWorksTM subframes, truck bodies and complete vehicle solutions for Hiab’s European customer base. It is the global competence centre for Hiab FrameWorks installations as well as the distribution centre for Hiab FrameWorks kits. “In 2016 we introduced to the market the HIAB FrameWorks, a modular system that provides the customer with a pre-manufactured, ready-to-install subframe that matches the chosen truck. When developing the FrameWorks concept, we wanted to pay special attention to the overall quality and safety of installations, reduce 6 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY / MARCH 2018 the installation time and have the products ready for our customers’ use more quickly. At the beginning, this new concept was available for our heavy range loader cranes, but we have broadened the offering with solutions for the Hiab medium and light range of cranes as well as options for the LOGLIFT and JONSERED forestry and recycling and also for MULTILIFT demountables,” says Marcel Boxem, Director, Heavy Range Loader Cranes, Hiab The new installation centre provides the customers with fully calculated, designed and tested installations as well as a high level of quality and safety due to the very controlled installation process with experienced Hiab Joakim Andersson, Senior Vice President, Loader Cranes, Hiab professionals. “With the new factory installation centre, we offer quick and reliable complete solutions with the best possible performance from the equipment. The centre will also share expertise in FrameWorks installations with our partners and our own installation shops,” says Joakim Andersson, Senior Vice President, Loader Cranes, Hiab.
