In most cases, the top and bottom boards are edged with a separate edging unit following the ripsaw. Recent installations of HewSaw single pass lines are in Finland, Sweden, France, Russia, Estonia, Belarus, Canada, USA, Uruguay, Brazil, Vietnam and South Africa. Depending on log size, many of today’s single pass machines operate at speeds of up to 200 metres/ minute (650 ft/minute) with some small log lines producing just a single or two piece solution running at speeds of over 300 metres/minute (1,000 ft/minute). Engineering and dx sawing HewSaw has over 200 employees worldwide including about 170 people at the factory and corporate office in Mäntyharju, Finland. This includes the company’s in-house engineering team of 10 people who spend their days developing new products and product improvements for existing machines. One of the latest advances from the engineering department is the HewSaw dx sawing process, which replaces HewSaw’s standard double arbour sawing technique with a four arbour system. With dx sawing, the first set of arbours will house the saws for an initial or pilot cut into the cant, while the second set of arbours will house a set of saws that finishes the cut. “When we equip our HewSaw sawing machines and sawlines with this patent pending technology, we can provide our customers with the ability to run larger diameter logs at faster speeds for longer periods of time, and we can reduce our saw kerf, increasing recovery and yield from each log,” explains HewSaw’s Chief Engineer, Raimo Karjalainen. around the world, HewSaw is there to keep machines operating at maximum potential. In addition to offering regular servicing and updates, HewSaw now offers a preventive maintenance program. Based on maintenance systems developed for the aircraft industry, Swedish company Wiser System AB has developed the preventative maintenance program, or MP for HewSaw. Wiser’s Managing Director Erik Kron asks, “What is the difference between an aircraft and a HewSaw sawing machine?” He answers his own question: “Not very much. They both consist of a large number of components in a metal frame requiring structured maintenance. So why not use the same maintenance methodology as the World’s most reliable machinery,” he concludes, adding, “after all, who wants an unplanned stop in an aircraft.” The key element in the HewSaw MP is to be proactive instead of reactive with centralized maintenance planning helping to avoid unplanned emergency repairs and component damage. HewSaw MP works by collecting data on a regular basis from participating sawmills and then predicting when parts will fail and replacing them prior to failure. With an in-house team of technicians and service personnel operating The HewSaw SL250 4.4 is the company’s latest sawline and includes dx sawing to maximize recovery and throughput. The SL250 lines can process up to eight edged sideboards from each log, eliminating the need for downstream edging. www.hewsaw.com
